Storing Fleece

"Fiber Talk"  Storing shorn llama fleece with protection against mildew, wool moths and carpet beetles.
by Mike Brown
Journal of the RMLA, Feb. 1998.

"Growing, Harvesting, Cleaning and Storing Lama Fiber"
 by Rebecca Abbott
Fiberfest Magazine, Winter ’93-‘94

 Fiber Sachets for stored fleece:
6 Tbs Lavender-dried (or Pennyroyal, tansy or red cedar chips)
2 Tbs Chammomile flowers 1 Tbs crumbled bay leaves
1 tsp ground cloves
2 crushed cinnamon sticks (or 3 Tbs ground cinnamon)
1 tsp orris root powder
1 Tbs salt

Mix and store together in an airtight container -shaking it once a day for a week then put about 2 tsp. in each sachet. To make sachet: Use cotton material (old sheets, etc. ) and cut in pieces about 6" x 3". Fold to make 3" by 3" and sew around entire edge, except for the last 2" or so. Turn right side out, put in mixture and sew or glue shut. Put in 1 for each bag of fleece. The recipe makes about 20-25 sachets.   Note: This recipe was shared by Liz Mitchko of Whirlwind Ranch in Missouri. It is a modified recipe from one that appeared in the Spring 1996 Alpacas Magazine.
